Why would you want a holiday home in Spain?

by PaulPayne on September 4, 2009

Here’s a few of the answers to that question that I hear from people coming over to look for a property in Spain;

“We’re fed up with terrible British Summers”

“We’re fed up with terrible British Winters”

“We feel better when we’re in Spain”

“We want somewhere the family can get together for holidays any time we want”

“Our money is earning nothing in the bank so we might as well invest it while prices are low, into a property that we can enjoy too”

The influence the big lamp in the sky has on our lives cannot be underestimated. Sunshine provides everything from the perfect metaphor for love in a pop song to warmth, comfort and relaxation. You would be forgiven if this was the only reason why you wanted to have your own place in Spain. Up to 320 days of sunshine a year is a pretty good reason enough I guess, but maybe you have other motivations too?

The World Health Organisation stated certain areas of Spain as some of the healthiest in the World to live. The Costa Blanca in particular, due to the temperate climate, the outdoor lifestyle, and quality Mediterranean diet, rich in all manor of vitamins and good oils. What makes Spain such a special place is combination of the people, the culture, the climate, along with a mix of positive attitude and living for the moment that make the average Spaniard immune to thoughts of problems that may be round the round the corner or may never happen. Even with this attitude the Spanish are very much aware of what is happening with others in the World and in Spain; they give the more per head of any Western Country to charity in the developing World.

On the subject of investing in property for monetary gains, we have to be very careful. In the history books, these last few years will go down as a bad time for real estate values, and for those who purchased within the last few years, it may take a little while until they see their investment grow beyond the original purchase price again. Bank and stock markets are both arguably less certain for a good return on your capital and certainly less enjoyable. Historically, investing in land, bricks and mortar is possibly the safest medium to long term investment you could make.

Now as long as your motivation to buy a property in Spain is not purely short term financial gain, you have good reason to invest into something that above all could give you many years of pleasure.

Can I see myself enjoying my hard earned time in this country is what you must ask before you even start looking.

Those who shouldn’t buy here are the following;

  1. Anybody who gets frustrated by things taking a little (sometimes a lot) longer to happen.
  2. Anybody not willing to embrace the culture if not the language
  3. People who don’t like noise. Spanish cities are loud and they hardly if at all sleep during the fiestas that can also be found in every village, town and city throughout the year.
  4. Anyone who does not have a clear idea of what they want their property to do for them

Those Who Should buy a home in Spain;

  1. Those who want to enjoy a better climate. Stay here for long enough and you’ll be complaining it is cold at 20ºC in January.
  2. Those who need a slower pace of life. Those who live here notice a huge difference when returning to the UK.
  3. Anyone who wants to be part of truly cosmopolitan and vibrant community.
  4. People looking to improve their lives and the the lives of their family for the better.
